DIY LANDSCAPING
Ready to tackle your own project? Landscaping in high alpine areas like Winter Park takes some strategy. Stick with native, cold-hardy plants that can handle the short growing season, intense sun, dry conditions, and heavy snow (all things that give Winter Park its charm!). Think hardy trees, shrubs, and flowers that thrive at high elevation. Evergreen staples like Colorado spruce, bristlecone pine, and white fir offer year-round color, while aspens and chokecherries give some seasonal dimension. For shrubs, go with tried-and-true mountain favorites like lilac, serviceberry, potentilla, and ninebark. And for a pop of color, perennials like columbine, lupine, yarrow, poppy, and penstemon bring life to any landscape and keep coming back year after year. And be sure to choose plants rated for zones 3–5 and those that are drought-tolerant or native to the Rockies! Looking to buy locally? Head to Cold Springs Greenhouse in Granby - they're our experts on growing in the high country. They have a great selection and will no-doubt point you in the right direction!
A few more pro tips: mulching helps retain moisture, and drip irrigation makes it easy to water efficiently. Keep snow loads and runoff in mind, especially near buildings and slopes. Hardscaping is a go-to and is especially useful because it holds up to our harsh conditions and helps create structure and stability. With freeze/thaw cycles, heavy snow loads, and steep terrain, natural elements like stone, gravel, and boulders perform best. They don’t need watering, don’t get damaged by snow plows or runoff, and can help with erosion control on sloped land!
Planting at the right time of year is key in high-altitude gardening. Spring and early fall are ideal. For spring planting, aim to plant after the last frost, typically from late May to early June. Early September is best for fall planting to allow plants to establish roots before winter.
BE AWARE OF NOXIOUS WEEDS!
Whether you hire a local landscaping company or create your own outdoor oasis, know that noxious weeds can invade your space. Spraying for noxious weeds helps protect native plants, wildlife habitat, and overall ecosystem health. These invasive species spread quickly, outcompeting local vegetation, increasing erosion, and even raising wildfire risk. To help us all stay on top of the situation, Grand County Natural Resources hands out free herbicide every Friday morning from 8am to noon at 469 E. Topaz in Granby from late May through September. Just bring your own handheld sprayer (½ to 4 gallons), and they’ll fill it. Check the list of Grand County's noxious weeds to control here. I'm so grateful for our county providing the resources we need to keep our slice of the Rocky Mountains beautiful and healthy!
